600 yards away from shore, Sergemt Knowles opened fire with his rifle, firing 13 rounds, which had the effect of discouraging further volleys.

Keeping close to the British side of the Inlet, Sergeant Knowles then returned to the Police Station, where he found the master of the shop, who reported that at about 6.00 am. that morning, a party of about 10 armed cadets and/or strikers, dressed in khaki unifoms, and blue (er black?) clothes or unifoms, had crossed over into our territory and fired at the junks, which had promptly moved off.

Firing being continued, the crew had jumped over board and swm ashore, one of them taking the precaution te remove two muskets, a carbine and ammunition, which he

took to the Police Station.

The "Cadets had then boarded the junks by

swimming or wading, and commenced to pole them off toward s Chinese territory,

After Sergeant Knowlesind beaten a retreat, the junks were observed to be anchored off the shore about † mile North East of Sha Tau Kok, and sampans were seen passing to and fro between the junks and the shore unloading the

cargo.

On his return to the station, Sergeant Knowles

reported to the Assistant Superintendent of Police, New

Territories, who then infomed me. I telephoned to Mr.

Fletcher, Assistant Uolonial Secretary and gave him the

particulars related above as far as I then know them.

At about 2.00 p.m. I received instructions

from Mr. Fletcher, to proceed at once to Sha Tau Kok, and

meet H.M.S."Foxglove" which had in the meantime been diverted

by wireless signal, and to co-operate with the Captain in

recovering the stolen junks. As regards recovery of the

stolen property and the detained coolies, I was informed

that our actions would have to be guided by circumstances,
